ACR is the acronym for the American College of Radiology – a 34,000 member professional society which includes radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians. All imaging facilities that provide mammography must be certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Mammography Quality Standards Act and Program. To be certified, an imaging facility must be accredited. The FDA has designated the ACR as an accrediting body. Imaging centers/facilities aren't required to seek ACR accreditation in other modalities (MRI, Ultrasound, etc.), but do so voluntarily.
