Accreditations
ACR is the acronym for the American College of Radiology – a 34,000 member professional society which includes radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, interventional radiologists and nuclear medicine physicians. All imaging facilities that provide mammography must be certified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under the Mammography Quality Standards Act and Program. To be certified, an imaging facility must be accredited. The FDA has designated the ACR as an accrediting body. Imaging centers/facilities aren't required to seek ACR accreditation in other modalities (MRI, Ultrasound, etc.), but do so voluntarily.
Some of the benefits of obtaining an ACR accreditation include an educationally-focused evaluation and peer review of the imaging center, expert assessment of image quality, the formal review may be used to meet the criteria of the American Cancer Society, state or federal government, or third-party payers, Medicare and other payers have enacted reimbursement policies which may require accreditation, and an ACR accreditation can also be used as a marketing tool. All nine of our Radiology Ltd. imaging centers have numerous ACR accreditations, including both of our Women's Imaging Centers, which each has a prestigious Breast Imaging Center of Excellence accreditation from the ACR. Physician certification is available online for free from the American Board of Medical Specialists (ABMS), at http://www.abms.org/Who_We_Help/Consumers/verifying.aspx

The Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE) designation is awarded to breast imaging centers that achieve excellence by seeking and earning accreditation in all of the American College of Radiology's (ACR's) voluntary breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules (Stereotactic Breast Biopsy, Breast Ultrasound and Ultrasound-Guided Breast Biopsy), in addition to the mandatory Mammography Accreditation Program.
