What is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia is a condition in which men have enlarged breasts, the most common benign disorder of the male breast tissue. It may be present in one or both breasts.
How is it caused?
Gynecomastia is thought to be caused by an imbalance in hormone levels, in which levels of estrogen (female hormones) are increased relative to levels of androgens (male hormones). Most often, this happens at birth, puberty, or as part of aging. Certain drugs (prescribed and recreational), herbal supplements, and health conditions such as liver disease, kidney failure or low testosterone can cause gynecomastia.
What are common symptoms?
The main symptom of gynecomastia is enlarged breasts. Some may experience tenderness or even feel a lump behind the nipple.
How is it diagnosed?
In most cases, gynecomastia can be diagnosed by a physical examination.
A careful medical history is also important. Gynecomastia can be confirmed by typical findings on mammography and/or ultrasound. If there is suspicion of male breast cancer, a biopsy will be performed.
How is it treated?
Pain or discomfort associated with gynecomastia usually resolves within one year. Breast enlargement or a lump may persist, however, should not increase in size. Addressing any reversible cause is important. Rarely hormone therapy or surgical removal of the breast tissue is required.
